JOHANNIS MENGES: The first information available regarding Johannis outside of Germany is found in "The Board of Trade Miscellaneous Pub.," Vol. 2, No. 28, Public Record Office in London England listing the poor Palatines that arrived at St. Catherine's (near London) and showing that John Menges, a carpenter aged 35, had arrived with his sons, aged 9, 3 and 3 months. According to these records, they belonged to the German Reformed Church. See also "The Book of Names," by Lou D. MacWethy (1930) at p. 75. In addition, this source mentions Hieronimus Menges (son), born October 7, 1700 and his first wife; Johann Leonhard Menges, born October 13, 1706 and his second wife; and Johann Michael Menges, born April 23, 1709 and died the same day. This source also mentions a John Menges who was a mason and stone cutter, aged 32 (indicating birth ca. 1677) and a Lutheran. His relationship to the Menges family is unknown at this time. See also the "Kittle Book," by Walter Allen Knittle, at p. 257 where he mentions that the Hans Menges and his "vrouw" were part of the third party to embark for America on June 5 through the 10, 1709. Hans is German for John and vrouw is Dutch for wife. Johannes Mingus/Menges and his family immigrated to New York in 1709. Reference John M. Mangus, James L. Powell and LDS FHC.
