ABIGAL OLMSTEAD: References: Dora Gates Christensen, Charles W. Heath (providing that Abigal is buried in the Pioneer Cemetery). According to information obtained from "Biography of Eliza Mac (sic) Powell," written by Dora Gates Christensen, as told to her by her grandmother, Susan Carter Heath: "Along with raising their family, my grandfather (James Harvey) Heath had two woman (sic) (wives) and the (police) officers were after the Polygamists (sic) so grandmother (Abigal Olmstead Holden Heath) being a second wife came and lived with my parents until her death in 1891." The following was obtained from Steven Heath and transcribed by him sometime in the 1960's from a manuscript told by Susan B. Walsh: "Biography of Abigail (sic) Olmstead (Holden)--1925: This is the story told me by my grandmother Susan Carter Heath with whom (Abigal Olmstead) lived for a number of years. Abigail (sic) Olmstead was born in Ohio near Lake Erie, 25 Feb 1818. She was the daughter of Harvey and Margaret (sic) Olmstead, the same Harvey Olstead (sic) that was captured by the British and held prisoner (in the war of 1812--note added by Teri Popp). It is told he and another Boy (sic), just meer (sic) boys, were taken prisoners, the British were afraid they would carry news back to the army, so they kept them a long time and then they escaped. Abigail (sic) was married very young to a man named Weed. By him she had two children (sic) Joshua and Mary Weed. |
He died and she married a man by the name of Williams. They never had any children and I do not know what became of him but later (she) married Whiley (sic) Holden and to them were born four children, John, Martha, Catherin (sic) and Caroline. They heard of Joseph Smith and his strange doctrine in her home state and joined the church in its infancy. She went with the Saints to nauvoo (sic). They were there at the time of the martyrdom of the prophet (Joseph Smith) and his brother Hyrum (Smith). They were driven with these saints hither and suffered the privations with the early church members. Grandmother Abigail (sic) was sealed to Whiley (sic) Holden and always went by that name even though she married later. She had her sister sealed to her first husband she hardly knew which one she loved the better (not sure who this reference it to--Teri Popp). They went to Jackson County (sic) Missouri at Independence but through cruel treatment were finally forced to look to the far west for a place to make their home. After they were driven from Missouri the saints after giving up their homes and everything dear to them in the middle of winter (sic). They gathered at a place called Winter Quarters and from there formed companies to go west to find a new home. She with her husband and six children were ready to start with the first company led by Brigham Young. But before the company left small pox broke out in the camp. The saints were so deprived of the necessary conveniences to handle the disease that many fell victims of the dreaded disease and died. Whiley (sic) Holden was (sic) who contracted the disease and died, also her oldest daughter Mary. She was left at Winter Quarters a widow with five small children, 2 cows a broken heart and a heavy burden to bare as were many of the other saints. There was one man who lost his wife, (sic) his name was Reynold. They were left with him. He had a wagon and one oxen so when the second company was forming it was decided to put her two cows with his oxen to draw the wagon and she was to look after his children across the plains. Can we imagine this sad little group in one of the wagons in a pioneer train. (sic) As we read of the trails (sic) they encountered on the plains from Indians and privations. But the Lord did bless them in many ways. And while the two cows helped to draw them over the plains. (sic) Night and Morning (sic) they gave the little group milk for their needs. If grandma (Susan Carter Heath) remembers right it was the Daniel Spencer Company. They came in this company and arrived in Salt Lake City Sept. 20, 1847. Grandma (not sure if this reference is to Abigal or Susan--Teri Popp) was a nurse or mid-wife as they were called in those days. That is how she maintained her family as well as render service to the needy. She was a dear woman and everyone seemed to love her. She always looked on the cheerful side. The first fee years in the Salt Lake Valley were very trying ones for she (sic) through the plagues of grasshoppers and crickets and many is the time she gathered Sego (sic) roots to help ike (sic) out a bare existence. Even at that the Lord was good to his people and they always found some way through. In the year 1854 or 1855 she married my great-grand father (sic) James Harvey Heath and to them were born two sons in Weber on the Weber River where they made their home. There (sic) names were Harvey Olmstead Heath my grandfather and William Heath. She (Abigal) was a second wife to great-grandfather Heath his first wife being a sister to her (Abigal's) husband Whiley (sic) Holden. Her name was Marie (sic) Holden (sic) she had ten children. This (the marriage of James Harvey Heath and Abigal Olmstead Weed Williams Holden Heath) was not a happy union and she finally left. She (Abigal) went to Provo (Utah) and there she keep (sic) house for a man named Sam Thompson and married him. But when he took a second wife she left him and went to Payson (Utah) to live with her daughter Catherine Mott. They moved to Chicken Creek close to Juab and from there to salina (sic) the next year after it (Salina, Utah) was settled the second time. She (Abigal) was a good church worker (sic) one of the officiers (sic) in the Relief Society in Salina. From Salina she went with her son, my grandfather (Harvey Olmstead Heath), to a place 10 miles east of Salina called Goosberry (sic) Creek and there she spent the remainder of her life. You may be sure she knew of the troubles with Indians and the fears these pioneer people of Utah had to endure. Their lives were full of toil and disappointment as only those brave people will ever know. One peculiar thing was she always wanted to see a train in Utah. But when they were about ready to take her to Provo for that was as far south as the railroad was in her time she suffered a stroke and died one year later at the home of her son William Heath at Loss Creek where she had gone for a visit. She died 18 or 26 July 1891 and was buried in Salina, Utah in the north cemetary.--Gathered and written by Susan B. Walsh, a cousin of Dora Gates Christensen." The following was obtained from Steven Heath and transcribed by him sometime during the 1960's: "Biography of Abigail (sic) Olmstead Holden Heath--Abigail (sic) Olmstead was born in Ohio, near Lake Erie, 25 Feb 1818. She was the daughter of Harvey and margaret (sic) Olmstead. The same Harvey Olmstead that was captured by the British Army, during the Revolutionary War [This must have been the war (sic) of 1812--Steven Heath] and held prisoner for seven years after which he escaped. [Comment by Steven Heath: no written record of evidence to support this information.] Grandmother (Abigal) married very young to a man named Weed, by whom she had two children, Joshua and Mary Weed. Then he died leaving a widow. After which she married Wiley Holden (sic) there was four children born to them, Martha, Caroline, Catherine, and John Holden. Caroline and Catherine were twins. It was during this time that she heard of Joseph Smith and his doctrine. In her home state she joined the Church (LDS) in its infancy and went with the saints to Nauvoo. (Same as other account--Steven Heath) She was engaged to marry a man by the name of Nickerson but he went back to the states to help bring provisions and died. She later married him (Sam Thompson--Steven Heath) and moved up Provo canyon to a place called Midway where my father (Harvey Olmstead Heath) was raised and went by the name of harvey (sic) Thompson (for a time--Teri Popp). In 1874 my father (Harvey Olmstead Heath, aka Harvey Thompson) married Susan carter (sic) being the first couple married in Salina. Soon after grandmother (Abigal) came to be with my father and mother and resided with them until her death being about seventy years (of age). Many times I have gone with her to glean, she would gather wheat tie it in small bundles and carry it home then she would cut the heads off and sort the straw saving the fine straws in one pile and the courser (sic) ones in another. After they were all sorted she would tie them in small bunches and soak a few at a time in warm water and braid them and make hats for the family and many to sell. The fine braid was used for ladies hats and the course (sic) for men and boys. She taught me how to braid straw, to card and spin and make yarn. Yarn and wool bats for quilts also to knit stockings (sic) she was ambitious and was never idle. She was a great reader, but books were scarce in those days at least in one (sic) home. In January 1891 she was taken with a stroke and laid for many weeks that she could not move. She finally got up again but (had) no use of her left arm. In April she took a second stroke and was up again the next day. In July she took a third stroke and died 26 July 1891 at Salina and is buried at the north cemetary in Salina. Written by her granddaughter--Harriet E. Heath, Wife (sic) of Hyrum Smith Gates."
JAMES HARVEY HEATH: Note that all vital records for Washington Parish, Louisiana, were destroyed in 1897 by fire (making it impossible to locate a birth certificate for James Harvey Heath).

According to James Harvey Heath's great-granddaughter, Beatrice Sena Heath, James is buried in the Bicknell Cemetery, Bicknell (formerly Thurber), Wayne County, Utah.
James Harvey Heath came to Utah in 1851 and made handcarts for the pioneers who came to Utah with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. See also "Pioneers and Prominent Men of Utah," Frank Esshom, Vol. 1, pp. 927-928 (Utah Pioneers Book
Pub. Co. 1913)(providing information about the birth, marriages, death and children of James Harvey Heath). According to notes collected by Beatrice Sena Heath, great-granddaughter of James Harvey Heath, written by Dora Gates Christensen, the following occurred to James Harvey Heath during his lifetime: "James Harvey Heath embraced the Gospel and joined the church (sic) of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the year 1839, June 15, in Hinds Co., state (sic) of Mississippi. He was baptized by Daniel Taylor of Beaver. He received the gift of tongues a month after baptism. He landed in Nauvoo (Ill.) March 25, 1840. He was ordained an elder under the hands of Dr. Richards and Charles O. Ride at April 3 Conference at Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1840. A terrible tragedy came into the family soon after he and his (first) wife joined the church and moved up to Nauvoo. Very soon after their arrival, his wife and four of his children died within a very short time of each other, all but his son George Fluker Heath. The "Nauvoo Neighbor" (a periodical) records that Teressa Heath, age 26 years; Sarah Ann Heath, age 5 years; and an infant died the week ending Aug. 21, 1843. The same periodical records that Jefferson Smith Heath (no age given) and Mary Jane Heath, age 2 years, died the week ending Sept. 25, 1843, leaving George Fluker Heath, age 6 years, and his father alone. James Harvey Heath was comforted and consoled by Brother Hyrum Smith, the Patriarch of the Church, and was given a most wonderful Patriarchal blessing, Oct. 1, 1843, by Hyrum Smith, a copy of which some members of the Heath family have. James Harvey Heath was called to labor for the Saints at Agusta (sic) Lee, Iowa Co., in 1840 for two years. He labored quarrying stone for the building of the Nauvoo Temple, and was also a member of a guard under Col. Hamon. He toured the southern states advocating Joseph Smith's policy concerning the national government. Carried political news of Joseph Smith in Sept., 1843, and all through the winter. He was ordained a Seventy by Benjamin James at April Conference in 1843, and set apart to fill a mission to preach the gospel in Mississippi and Louisiana. He was baptized for the dead in the Mississippi River in 1843, and was baptized for the dead in Nauvoo Temple in 1846." Eventually, after many hardships, James Harvey Heath moved on to Utah and settled at South Weber. "He took up a farm and was engaged in farming and stock raising for some time...He worked at sawing and hauling lumber for about three years, and then went to East Weber, bought a large adobe house, and lived there until he was called to St. George (Utah) in 1861...He was ordained a high (sic) Priest by George William Fawcett and William Perkins on St. George Temple block (in 1872). In the fall of 1872, he did baptisms and endowments in St. George Temple for the dead. Also in Manti Temple." According to the Heath family history, "he rounded out a long useful life, always the Pioneer, always courageous, an intrepid leader into new parts until the evening of his life. He made a deed of himself and all his property to the church (sic) in 1863, a deed that should never be broken. In 1872, in the fall he helped build a ferry boat. He was called to perform a mission working among the Indians in 1872. He joined the United Order in the summer of 1875. He moved to Wayne County, Utah, and built and run (sic) the first Griss Mill in Wayne County. James Harvey Heath died Oct. 21, 1904 in Thurber, Wayne Co., Utah (now Bicknell) among Friends and Relatives." According to James Harvey Heath's great-granddaughter, Beatrice Sena Heath, James is buried in the Bicknell Cemetery, Bicknell (formerly Thurber), Wayne County, Utah. According to information obtained from "Biography of Eliza Mac (sic) Powell," written by
Dora Gates Christensen as told to her by her grandmother, Susan Carter Heath: "Along with raising their family, my grandfather (James Harvey) Heath had two woman (sic) (wives) and the (police) officers were after the Polygamists (sic) so grandmother (Abigal Olmstead Holden Heath) being a second wife came and lived with my parents until her death in 1891."

18b. ALONZO12 MINGUS (BENJAMIN MILLSPAUGH11, HIERONIMUS (JEROME)10, CHRISTIAN9 MENGES/MINGUS, JOHANNIS8 MENGES, LEONHARD7, WILHELM6, HANS5, MATTHIAS4, JOST3, CLAUS2, HANS1), was born February 1834 in Berlin, Erie County, Ohio and died November 8, 1905 in Amboy, Illinois. He is buried in Prairie Repose Cemetery (Lot #136), Lee County, Illinois. He married first, before 1856, LYDIA PURDY, born about 1831-1833 probably in Ashland, Ohio; died after 1868. She was the daughter of PETER M. PURDY and CHRISTIANA (last name unknown). He married second MARY DRUEL after 1868. She died on November 2, 1891 in Chicago, Illinois. He married third ANNIE BOYD on October 24, 1894. See information obtained from the Department of the Interior regarding the military service record and medical discharge of Alonzo Mingus, military identification #248303 [reference Wallace W. Mingus ] regarding the three marriages of Alonzo Mingus and information on his children, all by first wife, Lydia Purdy. According to these records, Alonzo enlisted in the Army, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, 82nd Regiment in November of 1861. He committed to a three year term in the capacity of a wagon maker; however, he contracted typhoid fever and was found to be incapable of physical labor. He received a medical discharge on January 18, 1863, receiving a full pension of $12 per month. After his death, his third wife, Annie Boyd, tried to receive his pension for her in her position as widow (see documentation in possession of Wallace Mingus). The following is from the notes of Sharon Cooper, letter dated February 8, 1975: "At a Called Court held at Norwalk [Ohio on] January 27, 1837 the Hon. D. Higgins, Judge..." appointed guardians for Elisa-aged 8 years; Clark--aged 6; Trew--aged 5; and Alonzo-aged 2 years of age. They were listed as the minor children of Benj. Mingus, deceased and the guardian assigned was Trew Pattee, with Levi Parsons and Ashley Hollister accepted as surieties in the sum of $1,000.00 While Elizabeth Mingus appears to be buried by her grandfather, Hieronimus Mingus, the other children's whereabouts are unknown at this time. Some information received from James L. Powell (e-mail: owl@oz.net) on Alonzo Mingus and his descendants. See also Common Pleas Records of Minor Children of Benjamin and Mary Mingus found at Norwalk Courthouse, Huron County, Ohio. In the 1840 Census Alonzo appears and is listed as being 6 years of age. In the 1850 Census for Erie County, Ohio, he is listed as being 16 years of age. In the 1860 Census for Hayesville, Ashland County, Ohio, at p. 152, Alonzo is listed as a wagon maker. Ashland County is just southeast of Huron County, Ohio. Alonzo Mingus is found in the 1880 Census for Deer Creek, Sherman County, Nebraska. He is listed as 46 years of age with Ordell, age 22, and Otto C., age 12. No wife is listed for Alonzo Mingus on this census record. The place of birth for both his mother and father is listed as Germany (perhaps caused by a mix-up with the census taker as to where "Berlin" was located). There are records made regarding pension papers for this Alonzo Mingus; however, it is not known what type of service he served. [Was he a soldier? If so, which war?--JLP] See 1890 Nebraska CD 131 Veteran's Schedules and 1851-1900 Ohio CD 236 Marriage Index Ohio (Broderbund).

19. FRANKLIN P.12 MINGUS (GIDEON11, MOSES10, CHRISTIAN9 MENGES/MINGUS, JOHANNIS8 MENGES, LEONHARD7, WILHELM6, HANS5, MATTHIAS4, JOST3, CLAUS2, HANS1) was born 1814 in Jefferson Township, Muskingum County, Ohio,
or Ames Township, Athens County, Ohio; died between May 13, 1843 and May 13,
1847. He married HARRIET MANLEY March 7, 1834 in Muskingham County, Ohio. She was born January 14, 1817 in New York, and died 1857 in Union Township, Morgan County, Ohio.
The following information obtained from James L. Powell:
March 7, 1834 Franklin P. Mingus married Harriet Manly Muskingum Co., Ohio
There has been much confusion with Harriet (Manley) Mingus. She is sometimes listed as Harriet Manley Mingus as if that were her maiden name. Manley has been spelled several ways.
She has been confused with Harriet Hart Mingus, b. Jan 1, 1817 d. after 1850, the daughter of William E. Mingus of Moses Mingus. Harriet Hart Mingus said married John Hartly Oct. 5, 1848 Morgan Co., Ohio
1840 Census F. Mingus Ames Twp., Athens Co. Ohio p. 321
1 male 20-30 b. ca. 1810-1820
2 females under 5 b. ca. 1835-1840
1 female 5-10 b. ca. 1830-1835
1 female 20-30 b. ca. 1810-1820
It looks as if they have three daughters born abt. 1835-1840 but there could be other children later.
The only record of childrens name I have is
ALMIRA MINGUS, b. 1836, Morgan County, OH; d. After 1850, Union Township, Morgan County, Ohio. Is this a census record?
Is Elmina the same ? I have a listing as Elmina Mingus McElfresh b. abt 1835 under Franklin and Harriet Manley Mingus.
May 13, 1843 Franklin P. Mingus deeded property to Jonathan Rutter Athens Co., Ohio
This is the last record I have for him. Franklin P. Mingus must have died between May 13, 1843 and May 13, 1847.
Harriet (Manly) Mingus married Quiller Garrison McElfresh May 13, 1847
CAUTION: They also have a SON, Quiller Garrison McElfresh (1854-1920)
As both Harriet and Quiller were married before, it may be difficult to sort out children.
Child of FRANKLIN MINGUS and HARRIET MANLEY is:
i. ALMIRA13 MINGUS, b. 1836, Morgan County, Ohio; d. after1850, Union Township, Morgan County, Ohio.
20. LUCY12 MINGUS (GIDEON11, MOSES10, CHRISTIAN9 MENGES/MINGUS, JOHANNIS8 MENGES, LEONHARD7, WILHELM6, HANS5, MATTHIAS4, JOST3, CLAUS2, HANS1) was born 1816 in New York, and died after1850 in Morgan Township, Morgan County, Ohio. She married ALVA ELLIS October 20, 1839 in Morgan County, Ohio. He was born 1811 in Maine, and died after1850 in Morgan Township, Morgan County, Ohio.
Reference: James L. Powell providing:
Lucy Mingus appears in the 1850 Census: Morgan Township, Morgan County, Ohio at p. 404:
Alva Ellis; age 39; carpenter; born Maine
Lucy Ellis; age 34; born New York (but see note below)
Wm Ellis; age 9; born Ohio
Mary A. Ellis; age 8; born Ohio
Otis Ellis; age 6; born Ohio
Roswell Ellis; age 4; born Ohio
James Ellis; age 2; born Ohio
Lucy Mingus married Alva Ellis on Oct. 20. 1839 in Morgan Co., OH. In the 1850 Census they were living next door to Roswell Whipple, presumably on the same farm previously inhabited by Gideon Mingus. It is interesting to note that she had a son, Roswell Ellis, named after Roswell Whipple.
QUESTIONS by JLP: Are there any ELLIS Histories that might help? Is there a CENSUS record for Alva Ellis family for 1840?
Reference: Ann H. Britton seeking information on Lucy Mingus, said to be born in New York in 1816, but, according to James L. Powell, she was probably born in Ohio.

"In memory of Mrs. Mary Vickers, who was born April 9, 1821, and departed this life January 20, 1900, aged 78 years, 9 months and 11 days. She was married July 7, 1839, to John J. Vickers. See also obituary of Mary [Mingus] Vickers listed in the "Vinton Enquirer," February 1, 1900, at p. 3:
"Mary Mingus was born April 9th, 1821, departed this life January 20th, 1900, aged 78 years, 9 months and 11 days. She was united in marriage on July 7th, 1839, to John J. Vickers who departed this life April 16th, 1863. To this union were born eight children, five of whom survive her; twenty-six grandchildren, seventeen of whom are still living; and sixteen great-grandchildren, all of whom survive. Her husband enlisted in the army in 1862, in Co F, 114th Reg't, O.V.I. He hadn't been out very long until his Master called him home. He was a member of the church for a period of more than 25 years, class leader at Macedonia, for about seventeen years. He died in the Sunny South, near Milliken's Bend. Mrs. Vickers united with the church over 55 years ago, and has lived a consistent Christian until God said, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things - enter thou into the joy of thy Lord." Just before she departed this life, said to all inquiring friends, "That all is well." She leaves three sons, two daughters and a host of friends to mourn their loss. But they have a comforting hope left behind, that if they prove faithful a few days longer that they will meet mother where parting will be no more. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Harble, pastor at Macedonia. His text will be found in Hebrews 9th Chapter, 27th Verse, and reads as follows 'And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgement.' After the funeral services were over, she was laaid (sic.) to rest in the Walnut Grove cemetery."

43. WILLIAM A.12 MINGUS (WILLIAM E.11, MOSES10, CHRISTIAN9 MENGES/MINGUS, JOHANNIS8 MENGES, LEONHARD7, WILHELM6, HANS5, MATTHIAS4, JOST3, CLAUS2, HANS1) was born October 17, 1833 in Salt Creek Township, Muskingum County, Ohio, and died May 10, 1911 in Sturgis, Michigan while visiting his brother, Alexander Mingus. He married (1) CYNTHIA ANN VORE on January 11, 1860 in Morgan County, Ohio. She was born 1838, and died January 04, 1875 in Homer Township, Morgan County, Ohio. He married (2) LOVINA [VORE] CHAMBERS, the sister of his first wife, CYNTHIA ANN VORE. The following information obtained from an essay written by Eleanor Marvin: "William A. Mingus, son of William E. and Hannah Lewis Mingus, was born 10-17-1833 in Salt Creek Township, Muskingum Co., Ohio. In 1855 William fathered an illegitimate son, Josephus Mingus. Josephus and his mother, Nancy Moore, lived near Bishopville, Ohio, on a little creek. They were very poor. William offered Josephus' mother a large sum of money if she wouldn't call the boy Mingus but she refused saying, 'Mingus he is and Mingus he will be called.' January 11, 1860 William A. Mingus married Cynthia Ann Vore, (marriage recorded at the courthouse in McConnelsville, Morgan County, Ohio). She was born 2-10-1837. She died of TB at the age of 37 and left three small children. Children: 1. Arminta, b. 1862; 2. Perley, b. 1864; 3. Lola, b. 1866. Arminta had a little girl, Blanche. Someone dropped her when she was very small and she was crippled from that. 6-19-1883 Arminta died giving birth to a second daughter, that also died. Blanche, the first baby, died soon after. William put up a tombstone in Sand Rock Cemetery, now called Wilson Chapel Cemetery. After Cynthia Mingus died, William boarded the children in different households as he worked to provide for them. In later years Lovina Chambers, Cynthia Mingus' sister, came to make a home for William, herself, Perley and Lola. Lola had a hard life. She had been dropped, when an an infant, by a hired girl and as a result she was hump-back. Then when Lola was a teen she jumped off the schoolhouse porch and injured her knee. She was carried home where she went to bed and refused to move her knee. When she finally decided to try to walk, the leg was drawn up and she could not straighten it out. For the rest of her life she went about on crutches, the leg drawn up behind her and covered by her long dresses. William left money so that Lola could be cared for (after he died), but she foolishly loaned it out to kin and neighbors. In those hard times, no one paid her back, so she was moved around from one household to another, 'boarding' out what was owed to her. In early 1911, William A. and his daughter, Lola, came to Sturgis, Michigan to visit Alex Mingus and his family. William developed blood poisoning in his leg, which turned into gangrene and he died May 10, 1911. Alex Mingus bought a burial plot in the Oaklawn Cemetery, Sturgis, Michigan for William & Lola (per cemetery deed). Lola remained in Sturgis living with Alex and family until April 14, 1914 when Nettie Mingus married Albert Pagels, then Lola went to live with them. I remember Lola as a tiny, quiet person, wearing long dresses with great full, long skirts, tight, high necks, with long sleeves. She wore her hair swept up in a bun on top of her head. Her skin was so delicate, I could see her blue veins showing on her hands and temples. I also remember Lola sitting in a rocking chair and scraping apples for my oder sister, Dorothy, younger brother, Harold and myself. We kids would gather around her chair and Lola would give each a teaspoon of scrapped apple, in turn. When Lola got done scrapping the apple she had just a very thin skin and core left. She had apple scrapping down to an art. HA! In March 1923 Albert and Nettie bought a farm in Sherman Twp., Sturgis and moved there to live. Lola moved with them but in the fall she moved back to Ohio, as all the bedrooms in the farmhouse were upstairs and were unheated. Lola would always go upstairs using her crutches but when she came down she would sit down and slide down. Lola died Jan. 3, 1940 at McConnelsville, Morgan Co., Ohio. Her body was brought back to Sturgis to be buried beside her father, William A. Mingus." The following obituary was received from Eleanor Marvin and appears on line at http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/Mi/StJosephObits/16969 : "Burr Oak - William A. MINGUS, 77, died May 28, l911, at the home of his brother, Alexander MINGUS, of Burr Oak Township. Mr. MINGUS was ill for a short time and death came as the result of gangrene of his leg. Mingus."
