       iii.        Waitstill/Waitsel Heath, born about 1768 probably in Pennslyvania; married about 1788 in New York to William Baker, born about 1765 in Dutches County, New York.  According to James Carlson: "William Baker "enlisted as a drummer boy, 10 Apr 1781, in the Dutchess  County, New York Militia (Private, Second Reg. Officers: Willet, Reg. Company Commander Welp). He later served with a Pennsylvania regiment.  He lost both feet by reason of frost bite in winter of 1782. William and a companion were so badly frozen just at the close of the war that their only chance for life was amputation of feet and legs to the knee. The companion refused, saying he would die than go through life as a cripple. William said he would rather take the chance which he did. Both legs were amputated just below the knee; the other man died. William Baker was not eighteen years at the close of the war. William Baker married Waitsel Heath. He learned tailoring to support his family and was a respected member of his community. Waitsel died at the birth of her second daughter, who was named for her and called Waity.  William Baker married again to have someone to look after the children. The new wife, Polly Moore, tried to drown the baby, but some fishermen rescued her. She was bound over to Mr. and Mrs. Philip Andrews on November 16, 1804.  The record is found in Volume 144, Library of Northumberland County, Pennsylvania Historical Society.  Mr. Andrews died and Mrs. Andrews married Mr. Robert Tietsworth. Waity married Daniel Mettler, and after Mr. Tietsworth's death they moved to Knox County, Ohio, taking Elizabeth Tietsworth with them. His wives were said to be a very beautiful women.  Both of his wives were crippled. When asked by a friend how he came to win two such lovely wives he would laugh and say, "you see, I went to them on my knees"--Source:  Written by child of one of William's great-grandchildren, probably Lucy Honora (Cooper) Daniel."
